Meet Alvaro and Leticia Perdomo, our National Directors in Guatemala. Alvaro was born in Guatemala City and escaped poverty by working hard to get his degree in architecture. He was hired by the government to help design the nation’s expanding electric system. Soon after his marriage to Letty there was a sudden change in politics and Alvaro lost his job. Due to this personal crisis, he went to a local church for solace and soon accepted Christ. Eventually he opened his own design firm and construction business. But he was not satisfied with a secular job. “I believed God had a different plan for my skills.” One day, he rented a small shed in a poor neighborhood in Guatemala City and offered ham and cheese sandwiches to children if they would come to a Bible Club. Five kids came, then ten, then thirty. Soon hundreds of children were coming. Today, Alvaro and Leticia direct the Shalom Baptist Church, Manos de Amor medical clinic, and Shalom Christian School. Together they oversee the school with a current enrolment of over 700 students. They provide a daily breakfast program for 300 children, job-training programs, and medical/dental services for 10,920 (annually) children and families living in the ‘Rat’s Nest’ barrio community.
